Chris Linning: BIM and Facilities Management at the SOH

Posted: October 18, 2013 in Uncategorized

6When a lecturer talks about such an iconic building in Australia, it is bound to be an interesting hour. Chris Linning was originally the librarian at the Sydney Opera House  (SOH) and is now a part of the operating maintenance team of the SOH. The thing that got me most intrigued about the SOH is some of the statistics! For example:

  • Use of BIM at the SOH

Use of BIM at the SOH

There are 60-65 people doing the maintenance on the SOH

  • There are 8.2 million visitors each year
  • The SOH is a prime terrorist target
  • It cost $102 million to build
  • Conducts 3,000 events each year
  • Has an annual audience of 2 million for its performances
  • Has roof sections held together by 350 km of tensioned steel cable

There has been a big progression in BIM development for the SOH. Because the SOH is so big and complex in design, there are hundreds of drawings that go with it. Therefore, using technology for assistance, such as BIM, makes it easier for future operations such as facilities management. I think that the introduction of BIM to the SOH is also ‘keeping up with the Jones’s’. I have linked some light reading on BIM and the SOH below.

Chris then went on to talk about the VAPS project (Vehicle Access & Pedestrian Safety). The VAPS project is designed to enhance tourist and visitor safety by removing heavy vehicles from the Forecourt to a new underground loading dock. This will allow pedestrians to have safe and undisrupted access to all the Sydney Opera House facilities at Forecourt level. I believe this is money well spent due to the numerous trucks that come in and out of the SOH each day and the risk it proposes to the public. That raps up the last of the 9 industry speakers. This has been a great university project and I hope you’ve had a chance to have a read through my previous blogs.
